Consultants are typically engaged by Boards, Chairmen, Chief Executive Officers or General Managers and of course, by business owners.
More importantly, what sort of person engages a consultant?
After all, consultants can be threatening. They almost always recommend some sort of change. They can be expensive. They are challenging by their very nature. They question, they investigate, they analyse and they tend not to shirk away from inconvenient truths. Consultants will even recommend restructures that eliminate jobs – sometimes even the jobs of the person they were engaged by.
The answer is that consultants are engaged by mature business people who understand that complex situations need problem solving experts. Business people who appreciate that sometimes it’s necessary to take one step back to take two steps forward. Business people committed to the achievement of organisational objectives, even if they might conflict with personal goals.
But remember, consultants are engaged for specific projects and work to agreed guidelines. People who engage consultants know what they want. It’s the consultant’s job to help them get there.
